Sponsored silence at St. Edwards School

An eerie silence descended across St Edwards’ School on Monday morning.  The School Council, which is run by the students, had chosen to hold a sponsored silence to raise money for Duchess of Kent House Charity, their local hospice charity.

Grant Mottram, Principal, St Edwards School said “This was especially challenging as the sponsored silence incorporated the morning break and the boys are usually full of stories to tell about their weekends.  We are very proud of all the students for taking part and raising money for such a worthwhile cause.”

George Solly added “The general perception is that hospices and hospice care only affect older people.  By getting local schools such as St Edwards involved it helps children understand what palliative care is all about.  The £2600 raised by the boys will go towards the services we fund at Duchess of Kent House.”

Ian Harte who plays in defence for Reading Football Club gave the boys a treat by popping in to see them and gave a chat to the students.  The Irish international posed for photos, signed autographs and even popped back to his car to produce a pair of signed boots for one lucky youngster!  Reading Football Club is supporting Duchess of Kent House Charity as part of The Football League’s Official Charity Partnership with Help the Hospices.

St. Edward’s School in Tilehurst, Reading, is a small independent day preparatory school for boys aged 4 to 13.
