Hospice Memorial to Lion

Members at Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club have donated a special urine test machine to Duchess of Kent House in Reading, in memory of a much respected Lions Club member, Brian Godley. Brian, who died on 1st November 2010, had received specialist end-of-life care for more than five weeks at the unit before he lost his brave battle against cancer and sadly passed away at his home in Whitchurch Hill.

Last week, Brian’s widow Doreen Godley, attended a formal presentation to the hospice by Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club of this innovative and compact machine. George Solly, Director of Fundraising at Duchess of Kent House Charity had earlier consulted the nursing staff who selected this particular machine to be purchased with the £500 donated by the Lions Club. On receiving the machine, discretely inscribed with a memorial plaque, Mr Solly said “The nursing staff have been so impressed with the effectiveness and accuracy of this machine that they have put in a request to purchase another one”.

Making the presentation on behalf of Goring, Woodcote & District Lions were Jon Solman, acting Club President and Lions member Charles Slater, together with Mrs Doreen Godley.

Staff of Duchess of Kent House Hospice were thanked for the excellent care and support they had provided Brian Godley, which was very much appreciated by him, his family and all his friends. Brian had been a Lions Club member for just over 40 years and is sorely missed for his enthusiasm and willingness to help people in need.

The Lions club currently with 19 members aims to help people and projects in the local community and raise funds for charity throughout the year. At the same time they are part of Lions Clubs International, the largest voluntary organisation in the world with over 1.3 million members worldwide and over 18,000 members in the U.K.

Every pound donated to Lions by the public goes to charity with no administration charges taken out.

To learn more (without commitment) local Lions Club members would be happy to meet with anyone wishing to join or help Lions to make a difference for people in need. Please telephone: 0845 833 9837, e-mail: info@lions-gwd.org.uk or view the website: www.lions-gwd.org.uk
