Congratulations to Galaxy High (pictured) - winners of the 2011 Duchess of Kent House Charity 5-a-Side Football Tournament.
The annual contest turned the weather around to produce a glorious sunny day enjoyed by all participants.
24 teams from all over Berkshire (double the number of teams from last year) took part in a competitive but good-natured knock-out competition refereed by 6 professional referees. Sponsored by Westcoast, all participants were given a medal and goody bag, with a returnable shield for the winning team and trophies for the winners and runners-up. Ady Williams ex Wales and Ex Reading player presented winners and MP Alok Sharma the runners up.
George Solly, Director of Fundraising said;
"We are thrilled at the response to this year’s tournament and are grateful to all those who supported the event and helped to make it such a success. We have received wonderful feedback from the teams and the Charity is looking forward to the 2012 tournament".
The winning team, Galaxy High made up mostly of players from Westcoast beat TVSAS in the final by 7 goals to 3 and then also played an Ex-Reading Royals Team – and won!
Reading West MP, Alok Sharma, present the trophies and Reading Mayor, Cllr Deborah Edwards, came along earlier in the day to show her support.
Alok said: “I was delighted to be able to attend the charity tournament again this year. The hospice provides an invaluable service to the local community and so I am very pleased that the event was a great success.”
The event took place at Prospect Park, at the same time as the annual Lions Fun Day. This year the Reading Society of Model Engineers also held two open days in Prospect Park in aid of Duchess of Kent House Charity and Macmillan Nurses.
